ERCET is about space

Within the ERCET value Area Optical & space science, we will work towards establishing a permanent scientific data center for optical astronomy and satellite data.

The team aims to:

  • Establish a permanent scientific data center for optical astronomy and satellite data, particularly the NL Euclid Science ground segment data center;
  • Become a premier partner for Big Data projects of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO);
  • Extend the application of our Big Data expertise to commercial and scientific applications;
  • Pool the core resources (compute, storage, database resources) with specific software integrating it and connect it to project-specific software.

Valuea area: optical & space science

A major component of this center will be the glamorous NL Euclid Science Ground Segment (SGS) data center, which will be the first of its kind in the Netherlands. Moreover, the optical and space data center will become a premier partner for Big Data projects of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Scientific and business partners will collaborate to ensure translation of the Big Data expertise within the center to commercial and scientific applications.

"The interesting aspect of Big Data is that when you solve the challenges for one industry the same solution can be replicated elsewhere. The machine learning and cognitive algorithms we are developing to analyze the data from deep space are just as important for predicting flooding and forecasting energy demand.”

Dr. Ton Engbersen, scientific director ERCET
